This heroic pet pooch carried out an impressive rescue - saving his puppy best friend from drowning in a fish pond.

The brave brown dog named Hand was playing with Soh, a three-month-old white mutt, in their owner's yard in Lopburi province, Thailand, on August 5.

Hand, a two-year-old Aspin, was on the other side of the road as Soh struggled to escape from the 5ft-deep pool she had slipped into.

Footage shows Hand bounding over to the pond's ledge, seemingly unsure of how to help his best friend who was thrashing about in the water.

In a desperate attempt to drag Soh out, he chomped on the side of her face and tugged hard, but this only hurts the hapless dog, who snapped at her rescuer out of pain.

With her wet fur weighing her down, Soh bobbed in and out of the water while struggling to cling onto the slippery rim of the fish pond.

Hand was briefly distracted from the ordeal by a flock of birds which he sprinted at and chases away. Soh's anguished whimpers alerted him to the danger and he rushed back to her side to continue the rescue operation.

Security footage captured the moment Hand made a decisive pull on the back of Soh's neck to keep from hurting her then finally hoisted her up to safety.

Out of danger, the grateful pup regained her vigour and was seen chasing after Hand to resume their playing.

Onlooker Suriya Saengboon, who lives with the dogs, said: 'The other dogs ran away and only Hand remained to help his best friend. I watched him use his little mouth to grab onto Soh's neck and pull her out.

'I'm glad my dogs learnt their lesson to stay away from the pond and I'm also very happy to know they care for each other.'

Suriya said that Soh now refuses to walk near the pond after the incident.
