This is the dramatic moment heroic passers-by rescued a driver stuck in a sinking car in a pond in Thailand.

Footage shows the locals wading through the chest-deep water towards the half-submerged sedan in Ayutthaya province on November 29.

They fruitlessly tried to open the locked front doors before banging on the windows hoping to retrieve the injured motorist still in his seat.

Luckily, the 60-year-old driver regained consciousness and managed to climb into the passenger's seat before opening the door for his rescuers.

The men carried him through the pond, with other bystanders pulling them to dry land using a rope.

One of the brave rescuers, Phetpatum Muangraj, said he spotted the car in the middle of the pond while driving home. He called authorities before plunging into the pool himself as time was running out.

He said: 'I was confused when I saw the car floating in the water. I thought it might be too late if I waited for the emergency service so I rescued him myself along with other men.

'The driver only had a few bruises on his body. I'm glad we all helped him before it was too late.'

Paramedics administered first-aid on the driver, who did not suffer any life-threatening injuries.

It is unclear how he crashed his car into the pond.
