This is the heartwarming moment a heroic boy climbed down into a dirty canal to save an injured dog.

Nini Ragos was on her way to the market in Caloocan City, the Philippines when she noticed the stranded dog in distress on August 21.

It appeared to have slipped on the wet ledge and plunged into the canal below.

Nini and her friend called for help from locals, but only the young boy stepped in to volunteer.

She said: "We were about to go down ourselves when the boy volunteered to take the dog. He was so brave and kind."

The hero boy went down the canal and pulled the weak dog into the banks where Nini and her friend prepared a basket with rope so they can carry it up.

After the rescue, they found that the dog appeared to have suffered injures from the fall onto the rocky surface.

The female dog had also recently given birth as its nipples were swollen with milk, so they looked for the puppies nearby where they found six.

Nini said: "The mother dog may have been scavenging for food last night during the heavy rain, and fell because of the slippery floor."

The mother dog and the puppies are being taken care of by Nini until they can all adopted in new homes.
