A politician who staged a Peaky Blinders-style wedding complete with what appear to be real military assault rifles for his best men is being investigated by police.

Bizarre footage of Jaguariuna city councilman Silvio Teles de Menezes' entrance into the church in Brazil left locals astonished.

Menezes, a huge fan of the British series set in early 20th century Birmingham, and his groomsmen dressed wore trenchcoats and the show's trademark flat caps.

The politician style himself as his hero Thomas Shelby, played by Oscar winner Cillian Murphy.

Two of his entourage had new Taurus T4 military assault rifles while de Menezes swaggered up the aisle carrying a semi-automatic pistol.

Behind them, a fourth member of the troupe takes up the rear with a second pistol as they enter the Santa Isabel chapel on April 27.

As well as being a politician, Menezes is also a cop in Brazil's Municipal Guard, or local police force.

And the two best men with assault rifles are reported to be the MG's commander and one of the unit's inspectors.

The ceremony came shortly after the Municipal Security Department reportedly acquired a cache of new Taurus T4s at a price of BRL15,000 (GBP 2,318) each.

Menezes, who is suspected of borrowing live weapons, is now being investigated over the stunt.

The department would not confirm if the use of the guns, which can empty a 30-round clip in two seconds, had been authorised or if they were replicas.

De Menezes denied any wrongdoing to local media and said he has a licence to carry firearms, blaming the row on 'political persecution'.

He told local media: 'The wedding was a dream of mine and my wife's. As for the procedure performed, I will be available to answer for it.

'As for the weapons, I will not comment as I am awaiting the proceedings by the Internal Affairs team to be concluded.'
