An air conditioning unit exploded injuring at least four people at a jewellery shop in India on Thursday.

The blast ripped through the Kalyan Jewellers showroom Bellary, Karnataka, at around 6:30 pm local time on May 2.

Paramedics took the injured people to the Vims Hospital in the city. Officials said that one of the victims was critically injured.

Onlookers said the blast sparked chaos, with shattered window panes and debris strewn across the floor. Police believe an electrical short circuit caused the explosion.

Police believe the incident was caused by a malfunction in the central air conditioning system's gas replenishing procedure.

The Ballari Superintendent of Police has said that there is no suspicion of foul play, attributing the explosion to a fire in the air con vent.

Investigations into the blast are ongoing.

Earlier this year, an air conditioner explosion at a woman's home in Vile Parle, Mumbai, resulted in a fire and her injury.

Following the explosion believed to be caused by a short circuit, Swarupa Shah, 45, was found unconscious in her apartment by neighbours who noticed black smoke emanating from her door leaving onlookers stunned.
