This is the bizarre moment a bungling driver crashed through a car park barrier after getting tangled up in the car's automatic gears.

CCTV footage shows how the motorist approached the red and white gate while hanging out of the vehicle in Bangkok, Thailand, on February 11.

The blue two-door hatchback surged forward with the driver standing on the side of the car trying to push the brake as his girlfriend screamed.

However, he was unable to regain control and ploughed through the barrier before crashing into a lamppost at the end of the driveway.

Speaking to local media, he said: 'This was the car's fault. The accelerator was stuck.'

Staff from the apartment block that captured the incident on surveillance cameras said the driver left the automatic transmission in 'drive' instead of neutral while he was waiting for the barrier to lift.

He appeared to then forget to keep his other foot on the brake and panicked while the car moved forwards.

A security guard at the Condolette Ize Ratchathewi where the crash happened said: 'The driver is negotiating with the condominium staff to pay compensation for the damage.'

Thailand's driving tests are notoriously easy, with applicants able to pass with only a handful of lessons and a child-like written assessment. Many drivers and motorcycle riders on the roads have also never taken tests.

The country has one of the world's worst road safety records. Ministers have set the goal of reducing fatalities from 32.7 deaths per 100,000 people to 12 per 100,000 people by the year 2027.

However, a lack of road safety education in schools, cheap loans for cars, notoriously easy driving tests, police failures to enforce road laws as well as endemic corruption and chronic under-investment in infrastructure hamper the efforts.
