A teary-eyed bride made a bouquet from fresh onions amid a shortage of the vegetables in the Philippines.

The blushing bride April Lyka Biorrey turned heads when she walked down the misty aisle, not just for the elegant white gown she wore but for her unusual choice of bouquet in Iloilo City on January 21.

Instead of holding the traditional flower arrangement, the practical newlywed chose a bright violet wreath of onions so she could still use them later.

Footage shows April on her special day as she held the 3kg worth of produce delievered from an online retailed earlier that morning.

The practical newlyweds, April and her husband Erwin Nobis, then ate the onions after to save money, instead of using flowers that 'would wilt anyway'.

April said: ‘Initially, we were going to stick to the original tradition of flowers for the entourage. But while I was browsing through social media, I saw a bouquet of onions with a touch of flowers.'

She added the groom was also in on the plan, and the couple thought it was a good idea.

The bride said: ‘I consulted my groom if we could use onions instead of flowers instead, since after the wedding the flowers would wilt and would just end up being thrown away. ‘

Aside from the bouquet, the entourage also wore three ribboned onions on their shirt to match the theme.

April added: ‘So why not onions instead? It's practical in a way that it could still be used after the wedding.'

Despite being an agricultural country, the Philippines experienced soaring vegetable prices, up to 457 per cent higher than the global average.

A kilogram of onions in the country had become more expensive than beef, selling for as high as 600 PHP (8.87 GBP).
