A large smoke plume hung over the Marapi volcano in Indonesia after it erupted again today.

Footage shows the thick gray cloud of ash and smoke rising from the crater in West Sumatra on January 11.

The volcano has been active since December 25, and began belching ash up to 300 metres above its peak on January 7 at 6:11 am local time.

The Center for Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation (PVMBG) said in a statement: 'The ejection of ash accompanied by sand has the potential to hit the surrounding area.'

A danger level of II or 'careful' has been raised over the volcano, with authorities warning residents and tourists not to enter a three-kilometre radius within.

Climbing and hiking activities have also been banned as authorities wait for the seismic activity to settle down.

Ahmad Rifandi, volcano observation staff at the PVMBG, said: 'Mount Marapi's last eruption was recorded in 2017.

'Communities around Mt. Marapi must remain calm and not become provoked by false information about the eruption and always coordinate with PVMBG and follow the local government's directions.'
