Golden ringed Dragonflies Cordulegaster boltonii at Glasdrum Wood, Scotland

Buy video

Although Golden-ringed Dragonflies Cordulegaster boltonii are strikingly marked they can be surprisingly difficult to spot in their favoured roosting locations which are often low down and not far above ground level. Their markings blend in very well with their background and this camouflage provides the dragonflies with effective protection against the prying eyes of any potential predators. Fortunately for the Golden-ringed Dragonflies living in Glasdrum Wood in western Scotland there are no Eurasian Hobbies Falco subbuteo (dragonfly-hunting specialists) present although their range may well extend further northwards as global warming takes its toll. The photographer was in the process of kneeling down and filming one of these insects when a dog approached in a rather threatening fashion so the filming was curtailed rather rapidly! The response has been edited out!
