A passenger jet headed for Las Vegas was forced to carry out an emergency landing at Manchester Airport after a suspected technical fault was discovered.

Thomas Cook Airlines flight MT2718 took off from Manchester but the pilot decided to return as the aircraft neared the Irish Sea.

Fire engines were scrambled to the runway but the aircraft landed safely.

All 283 passengers on board the Airbus A330-200 were taken to the terminal.

On the morning of April 15th Thomas Cook flight MT2718 departed Manchester bound for Las Vegas. Around 20-30 minutes into the flight and just off the east coast of Ireland the Airbus A330-200 turned back and headed back to Manchester. The aircraft held for around 15-20 minutes over the Irish sea dumping fuel. As they left their hold they declared an emergency and squawked 7700. The 17 year old aircraft then descended and approached Manchester. Fire crews were out and waited for the arrival of the aircraft. Just after 11am the a330 touched down at Manchester, where it taxiied off runway 23R and came to a stop on the taxiway. Here fire crews inspected the aircraft, shortly after the A330-200 spooled up and taxiied to a remote stand. There is no confirmation as to the cause of the emergency however rumours suggest a possible fuel leak. The aircraft is still on the ground at Manchester and a replacement flight is also rumoured to be taking place later today. All passengers were ok and the fire crews on the ground acted very well.
